NZDE Qualification & National Curriculum

Review Project

About the project

We’re excited to announce that we’ve begun work to review the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (NZDE), an important Level 6 national qualification for engineering technicians.

We’re going to be working closely with industry and providers to review the NZDE qualification, followed by a review of the National Curriculum Document (programme) – to make sure that there is a fit for purpose qualification and programme, aligned to the future needs of the industry.

Why VEE.NZ is carrying out this review

VEE.NZ is the industry standard setting body for the Level 6 NZDE, and New Zealand Diploma in Engineering Practice. This is different from most Level 1-6 qualification on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF), where the Workforce Development Councils (WDCs) are the standard setting body.

Why this qualification matters

The NZDE provides a Level 6 option for those looking for, or currently in training towards an engineering qualification. Those who complete their NZDE studies can either move into an engineering technician role in industry, or they can continue their studies, with either the workplace-based New Zealand Diploma in Engineering Practice (NZDEP), or the Bachelor of Engineering Techology (BEngTech).

The NZDE is also aligned with the Dublin Accord, which means that the NZDE is an internationally recognised engineering technician qualification.

Latest news on the project

The Industry Focus Group, the overarching workgroup for the NZDE review, met on Thursday 11th September.  The group workshopped through a number of questions and sections of the qualification and programme; and made a number of recommendations regarding what the qualification and programme needed to include to best meet the needs of industry going forward.

VEE.NZ are currently working on a summary report of these recommendations (and their context) - and hope to share this for your feedback the week ending 26th September. Watch this space!
